When Maria first arrived at The Cornerstone of Beaver County, she was scared, exhausted, and unsure where to turn. After losing her job and facing an unexpected eviction, she found herself without a place to sleep — something she never imagined could happen to her. “I remember walking through the doors and feeling so ashamed,” she recalls. “But instead of judgment, I found compassion.”
At Cornerstone, Maria met with caseworkers who helped her access resources she didn’t even know existed — from emergency housing to job readiness support. With their help, she secured a stable place to live and began working toward long-term goals. “They didn’t just give me a roof over my head,” she says. “They gave me back my confidence, my sense of worth, and my hope for the future.”
Today, Maria works full-time and has her own apartment. She volunteers at Cornerstone on weekends, greeting new residents with the same warmth she once received. “This place changed my life,” she says. “They believed in me when I couldn’t believe in myself.
Every time she walks back through Cornerstone’s doors, now as a volunteer, Maria sees new faces filled with the same fear she once felt — and she makes sure they see hope instead. “You never forget the people who believed in you when you had nothing,” she says. “Cornerstone will always be a part of my story, because they helped me find the strength to start over — and the courage to dream again.”
